The work, “Library of Public Games,” brought from online in situ by the artist Maria Mandea

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, the last work from the Art in Public Space of the Accelerator program. Mentoring and production for emerging artists will be presented. The artist Maria Mandea invites the public from Bucharest to participate in the “Library of Public Games,” an intervention in the public space, which will take place starting at 12 p.m. in front of the Gloria cinema hall in the Titan district in Strada Bucovina no. 6, sector 3, Bucharest.

This In-situ activation proposed by Maria Mandea is harmonized with the previous online intervention, held at the end of June 2023, which opened the suite of art projects in public space within the Accelerator and marked the launch of the “Public Games Library.” Hosted by the Game Institute website, the “Public Game Library” is a collection of games containing rules and installation instructions, and these games can be drawn and played in the public space by anyone.

The work consists of a limited physical space, where the artist invited the general public to experiment and create new games. Through play, public space becomes a playful space, an inhabited, poetic, and active space. The intervention will be ephemeral, lasting only six months. Still, it can be repeated by the public here or in other public areas, following the game installation instructions available in the Public Games Library on the Game Institute website.
The library is open and accessible to any public, so it will also be a pedagogical tool to engage people in creating and understanding games in the public space.
After the intervention in the Titan neighborhood of Bucharest, the next step is the development of a network of playgrounds (public spaces in Bucharest) where the library becomes a platform accessible to everyone.

With a background in product design and scenography, her recent work explores participatory situations where she invites visitors to become actors and co-authors of the artwork.
In 2017 Maria Mandea co-founded the collective Super: Serios, in which she develops games and proposals for public space with other architects, urban planners, and artists. She co-founded Știrbei47, an open workshop and space for emerging and participatory art from Bucharest, in 2021.
