Brâncuși and His Muses, Pop Art – Warhol, Lichtenstein, Basquiat, War and Peace, Fjord – Photographs by Cristian Mungiu in the New Season at Art Safari New Museum!

The new season features an exhibition about Brâncuși and the muses who influenced his artistic creation, curated by Doina Lemny; an exhibition dedicated to Pop Art, curated by Alexandre Eram; an exhibition about war and peace, created by Dragoș Vărșăndan – two sides of the same history – alongside important works by Grigorescu, Aman, and Luchian; photographs by Cristian Mungiu taken during the research period for Fjord, the film that has a chance to bring Romania its first Oscar, as well as a series of other temporary exhibitions. The new edition can be visited until December 20.

“We are beginning the autumn with a rich season in which Brâncuși and his muses meet the great names of Pop Art, history is told through art in War and Peace, and Cristian Mungiu offers an intimate perspective on the world in the Fjord photography exhibition. It is the kind of programme that makes you want to return to Amzei 13 several times during a single season,” says Ioana Ciocan, Managing Partner of Art Safari New Museum.

Museum Pavilion: Brâncuși and His Muses

September 18 – December 20, 2026

More than 200 works, including 100 signed by Brâncuși – films, photographs, letters, drawings never before exhibited in Romania, and three exceptional sculptures – tell the story of the connection between the artist and the women who marked one of the most fertile periods of his creative life.

Among the muses featured are Baroness Renée Irana Frachon (the model for Sleeping Muse), Margit Pogany (the model for Miss Pogany), Lizica and Irina Codreanu, artist and writer Nancy Cunard, poet Mina Loy, dancers Marthe Lebherz, Florence Meyer, and Marina Saliapin, as well as the artist’s last partner, British pianist Vera Moore.

The exhibition is complemented by correspondence, posters, personal documents, and objects that belonged to these women (dresses and jewellery), some of them originating from important collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.

For the first time in the world, an unprecedented ensemble of 40 photographs by Brâncuși, held in the collection of the University of Arts in Cluj, is being presented on the occasion of the institution’s 100th anniversary. It is the most valuable collection of its kind after the one held by the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

International Pavilion: Pop Art. The World in Colour

September 18 – December 20, 2026

From Andy Warhol’s “Factory” to Roy Lichtenstein’s comic strips and the powerful voices of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the exhibition retraces six decades of Pop art and visual culture, from post-war America to its global echoes today. A special place within the exhibition is dedicated to the story of Romanian-born gallerist Ileana Sonnabend, a key figure in the promotion of 20th-century American art.

Historic Pavilion: War and Peace

September 18 – December 20, 2026

Produced in partnership with the National History Museum of Romania, the exhibition proposes a visual essay on the ways in which violence has, throughout the centuries, been invested with meaning and glory, while peace has always remained a fragile and fleeting state. The journey begins with Trajan’s Column and moves, through the horrors of the Great War and the class struggle of communist propaganda, towards the way Romanian art has recorded a permanent state of conflict – and its rare exception: peace.

Temporary Exhibitions Pavilion: Cristian Mungiu. Fjord, Photographs

September 18 – November 1, 2026

Beyond the big screen, Cristian Mungiu’s universe is revealed through a series of photographs taken during the research period for Fjord, the film awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The photographs capture moments of reflection and landscapes that fascinated the director and accompanied his creative process, forming a personal, intimate film built from glances, encounters, and memories. The exhibition invites the public to discover the behind-the-scenes of a creative process and to see the world through the eyes of the filmmaker who has made history in Romanian cinema.

“Preparing films is, for me, the happiest period of the entire production process. It is when I am allowed to wander through wonderful places and spontaneously strike up conversations with all kinds of people, under the pretext that I am working. I take a lot of photographs during these periods, not only for the film that will eventually reach the screens, but also for the most wonderful film of all – my life making films.

I manage to tell you very little about that one as it deserves, but for now I will begin with these photographs taken during our research for Fjord,” says Cristian Mungiu.

Fjord has qualified and is competing in all categories at the Academy Awards. This is the first time Romania has a real chance of being nominated for and winning an Oscar. The public can support the film’s promotional campaign, including by purchasing the photographs on display. Details are available on the film’s Instagram page, @fjordthefilm.

Interactive Pavilion: The New Climate. Are We Ready?

September 18 – December 20, 2026

Heatwaves, floods, droughts, and hailstorms are no longer exceptional phenomena, but risks we are increasingly learning to live with. Temporary Exhibitions Pavilion: The Art of Living Lunch

September 18 – October 18, 2026

What does the lunch break say about the way we live? The exhibition explores the paradoxes of modern life and transforms an everyday gesture into a reflection on time, work, and the joy of living.

Starting from Edenred’s mission to support the lunch break, the project becomes a platform for cultural awareness of the way we relate to the pace of life and to small moments of respite. Through installations created in the two spaces, visitors are invited on a “Lunch Safari” – an expedition through Romanians’ habits and contradictions in relation to time, work, and food.

September 18 – October 18, 2026

The exhibition proposes an unusual encounter between science and artistic expression.

Through the vision of artists Christina One and Felicia Simion, the exhibition explores the smile in its fundamental layers. The works on display capture inner states, hesitations, and moments of pure joy, bringing to light the stories behind every face.

Temporary Exhibitions Pavilion: Postwater. Objects That Lived Another Life at Sea

September 18 – October 18, 2026

A sensory exhibition about objects that lived another life at sea. Fragments of fibreglass recovered from old boats, bearing the traces of time, water, and their original function, leave their maritime context behind to be reinterpreted as unique, collectible pieces of furniture and lighting.

At the intersection of functional object, sculpture, and contemplation, Daniel Ștefăniță creates and produces recontextualized objects that receive a new identity and a new life. The material’s imperfections, patina, and transparency are celebrated, becoming part of the expression and uniqueness of each work.

The exhibition offers a sensory experience that subtly evokes the original universe of the material and translates it into a contemporary design space.
